Heather Austin-Weir
I was drawn to ceramics by the beauty of the interaction of shape and light, the way that the form and texture of the piece transform with illumination. I've been adding the element of raw, natural crystals to my pieces. I find that on one hand these elements align completely: both are stone from the earth; on the other hand, they are opposites, one opaque, the other translucent. My late pieces bring these elements together into a cohesive whole; not a light fixture, but a way to focus light through the lens of the clay and the crystals so that the light itself is the third part of a harmonious whole.
